Exceptions

Depending on how often you read the blog or meet me in person, you may know that I hate paper (German) and prefer non-urgent phone calls (German) to be scheduled by mail or IM in advance. However, there’s no rule without an exception, so here we go:

  1. My to-do list is a hybrid digital/paper solution. Everything that needs to be done more than once and/or later than tomorrow will go to „Remember the Milk„, which is then used as the basis for my daily paper-based to-do list. This workflow may change though, because I consider it a botchy workaround. Just today I heard of Eisenhower which hopefully will be available for Android too.
  2. I don’t schedule birthday phone calls I just ring people up. And I actually like being called on my birthday :)
  3. Postcards: I love getting postcards and hence send many of them. It doesn’t matter they’re from paper, but there’s another problem with postcards – most of them are ugly and touristy so I’d like to use my own pictures. Also, the Royal Mail seems to be unable to deliver something from their royal island to Germany (or any other place outside the UK) in less than ten days. I’m tempted to try Postagram next time.

Evening Edition

A few days ago I started reading the „Evening Edition„, which describes itself as „[t]he perfect commute-sized way to catch up on the day’s news after a long day at work„. Although I’m not commuting, I like the compilation and especially the angle in which topics are covered. Also I just noticed that there’re two version: one for the UK, which is perfect for actual evening news (in CET), and one for the US, which is – despite its name – great for the morning news. The only thing missing is an edition from continental Europe with a stronger focus on, well, continental Europe’s affairs. It’s already great the way it is though and I can only recommend it.

Nochmal die Post, diesmal eine positive Erwähnung

Weil ich hier nicht immer nur meckern will, gibt es jetzt auch ein Lob für die Deutsche Post DHL. Der Konzern hatte sich geweigert, ein NPD-Blatt als Postwurfsendung zu verteilen, woraufhin die NPD-Fraktion des sächsischen Landtags geklagt hat. Der BGH hat der Klage stattgegeben, das Blatt als Zeitung eingestuft und damit die Post verpflichtet, den Auftrag anzunehmen.

Ich finde sowohl die Haltung der Post, es auf eine Klage ankommen zu lassen, als auch das Urteil richtig. Ersteres, weil man Ewiggestrigen und geistigen Brandstiftern ruhig zeigen darf, dass sie nicht erwünscht sind. Letzteres, weil ich der festen Überzeugung bin, dass Infrastruktur aller Art neutral und indifferent gegenüber Inhalten sein muss. Auch, wenn es sich um unliebsame Inhalte handelt.

Dinge, die ich nicht verstehe: Warum es keine einzelnen Briefumschläge bei der Post gibt

Heute musste ich postalisch etwas versenden – nein, keine Angst, kein Papier – sondern eine Ware. Das kommt hin und wieder vor, und jedes Mal stehe ich vor dem gleichen Problem: Ich benötige einen Umschlag und eine Briefmarke. Beides habe ich nicht vorrätig, weil ich ungefähr einmal pro Wohnsitz irgendetwas verschicke, unnötige Lagerhaltung unnötig ist und die Post ständig das Porto erhöht. Weil ich außerdem oft noch nicht einmal weiß, wie viel Porto jetzt auf meine spezielle Sendung gehört, gehe ich meist in eine Filiale der Post und lass das vom Personal entscheiden. Damit wäre das Problem „Briefmarke“ gelöst.

Die Sache mit dem Umschlag ist allerdings wesentlich komplizierter, denn in (gefühlt) keiner Postfiliale bekommt man einzelne Umschläge. Selbst Luftpolstertaschen werden nur in 3er Packs abgeben. Da ich aber nur eine benötige, bleiben zwei übrig. Die kann ich entweder wegwerfen – was ich bei Neuware aber für äußerst verwerflich halte – oder bis zum nächsten Umzug aufheben – und spätestens dann werfe ich sie weg oder lass sie Heeme liegen.

Dinge, die ich nicht verstehe: WhatsApp

WhatsApp ist meinem Empfinden nach im Wesentlichen ein Instant Messenger mit starkem Fokus auf Smartphones und damit als Konkurrent zu SMS und MMS zu sehen. Viele der mir bekannten Smartphone-BesitzerInnen nutzen es und sind begeistert – genau wie jede Menge anderer Menschen:

Vor wenigen Tagen aber gab der Nachrichtenservice in einem ungewöhnlichen Akt von Offenheit per Twitter bekannt, nun zehn Milliarden Mitteilungen täglich zu handhaben – wobei diese Zahl eingehende und ausgehende Nachrichten summiert.

Und ich verstehe einfach nicht, warum.

Dropbox Android app and multiple SIM cards

During our trip to London, we got ourselves local SIM cards to avoid ridiculous roaming charges and still be able to use the interwebs. However, the Dropbox auto-upload function decided – for whatever reason – that all the pictures on my phone need to be re-uploaded. I guess it was the fact that I put in another SIM card, because nothing else changed. It only stopped when the battery was almost drained, but by then more than 400 of my 500 MB data allowance were gone -.-‚ Well, at least the network offers a decent upload speed :)

The strange thing is that Dropbox shouldn’t upload any file that’s already on its servers – and all of the pictures on my smartphone were. When comparing the two versions of some pictures (original and re-upload) I noticed that their MD5 hashes weren’t identical. I can’t explain that, but it looks like the re-uploads lost some of their meta-data.

So just in case you use Dropbox, enabled the auto-upload functionality and plan to use a (foreign / different / whatever ?) SIM card, have a look at your data usage or disconnect the Dropbox app.

London!

Es wurde mal wieder Zeit für einen Ausflug – die letzte größere Reise ist immerhin bestimmt schon mehrere Wochen Monate her – und das geht natürlich gar nicht. Mittwoch hieß es also ab in den Zug, dann ab in den Flieger, dann wieder in den Zug und zum Schluss noch in die U-Bahn um am Ende in einer beschaulichen Wohnung in London zu landen. Gründe gab es ja genug: der Herr Schlegel hatte die Abgabe seiner Masterarbeit zu feiern, wir waren beide noch nie auf dieser Insel und unsere Gastgeberin haben wir auch schon jahrelang nicht mehr gesehen.

Read (and unvalued) – The Epoch Index

„The Epoch Index“ (Author’s site, at Amazon) is a short-story by Christian Cantrell. It is set in the future though it’s unclear how distant that future is. Judging by the technology people use, it’s not too far from now. On the contrary, the progress made by society is enormous. It’s roughly 40 pages of killer-vs-detective catch-up with a twist in the end. A nice text, that contains at least one wisdom:

But at the end of the day, the safety of each and everyone of us really comes down to nothing more that the simple goodwill of others. [..] just about anyone on the street can kill you or your family at any moment for any reason – or for no reason, in particular.
